Comares

Comares is one of the highest white villages in Andalucía at 739 metres above sea level. It is located 28 kilometres from Málaga and 24 kilometres from Vélez-Málaga. It is known as the "Balcony of the Axarquía" because of its privileged position on a mountain top. The name originates from the Arab word for castle, Qumarix. Due to its excellent location, it was one of the main defense strongholds of La Axarquía.

Comares is on the Ruta de la Pasa, the route of the grape. Its labyrinth-like streets and its architecture, a reflection of its Moorish roots, are the most characteristic features of its landscape.

The Mudejar-style parish church (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación) and the Comares Castle are some of its main architectural features. The church is located at the highest part of the village and was built during the 16th century, boasting a beautiful coffered, stucco ceiling. The fortress still preserves two of its turrets and part of the ancient wall, which is known as La Tahona.

This village is also the birthplace of verdiales, a particular style of folk song in the villages of Málaga.

Comares has a zip line (436 metres long) from the village to the hill opposite. It is located to the north of the village.
