Salares is a small village nestled in the Natural Park and of Arabic heritage. It is located a 15 minute drive from the buzzing town of Cómpeta and a 45 minute drive to the beach and motorway.
It enjoys a sheltered climate, sitting at the foothills of the magnificent Maroma mountain and it is a favourite destination for hikers.
There are old footpaths that were previously used by the locals on mule back and are now to the hiker’s delight, for those who wish to enjoy more closely the wildness and nature that this village has to offer.
Additionally, there are some interesting monuments including a small fortress, built by the Arabs, in which one if its towers remains to this day near the church and is known as the ‘Casa del Torreón’. There is also an arched bridge over the river that joins both banks and was built many centuries ago by the Romans.
The village has a population of approximately 175 inhabitants and it offers different amenities such as a shop, restaurant, communal swimming pool and doctor’s surgery.
Salares is well-known for its annual festival celebrating the Al-Andalus history of the town.
